Hot Foil Stamping on Black Stock

Hot Foiling (also known as Hot Stamping) on black stock is not as straightforward as foiling on any other coloured stock. Black stocks can either contain pigments or carbon based dyes. Foiling on carbon based black materials can cause your foil to oxidise or change colour. This would be disastrous as oxidation will only occur usually 3 – 4 days later, many a times of which your finished products would be in the hands of your client.

MONOYONO and PENNETTA were two business card projects that required foil on black card stocks. Sometimes we use this particular chemical reaction to our advantage. When going for a vintage or rustic look. We deliberately use a carbon based black card stock to foil our prints. Let it rest a few days and the result would be a rustic metallic look. Bright shiny golds tend to have a tarnished look almost like a aged gold effect. Silver foils tend to have tiny spots that gives it a somewhat unique textured look. Do remember that the resulting effects are not consistent and every card looks different from the other.
