Dominie Press Singapore a Legacy not to be forgotten

With the Covid-19 pandemic hitting hard on both individuals and companies. The printing industry is fighting hard to survive.

Two weeks ago during Singapore’s Circuit Breaker, OVOL Singapore held a webinar session in conjunction with Book Binder Artisan Yang Shihui on the topic of Book Arts. The presentation was fantastic and it provided an interesting perspective on book binding. During the Q&A session, I asked a question on whether it was economically viable to bind books in ways that were out of the norm and if local print production houses were able to produce them locally. She mentioned that she had used Dominie Press for some of her projects before and they had done a great job.

I decided to hop on over to their website and update myself with what’s new in the market. Looking around their website, Dominie Press was established in 1979 and had built a good reputation for their outstanding production capabilities when it came to book printing and book binding. With three 5-Colour Presses and a full fledged bindery, they were able to produce books that not many print production houses could do.

In their gallery (“The Showcase”), I saw books with all sorts of finishes. Debossing, Hot Stamping on Case Bound Books. There were books bound with multiple interleaves, intricate die cut patterns on book covers. Gold Gilded Books, Exposed binding and so much more! Something only designers would sometimes digitally propose to a client. Assuming if the quotation even passes the clients wallet, these books are definitely not your usual perfect bound books with a plain full colour print. It’s a dream for many to actually take this to full production stage.

Do head on over to their website to check them out!

UPDATE 16th June 2020

I recently went back to Dominie Press website and sadly I was was greeted with a Chapter 50 notification. It was a notice about a creditors meeting. It looks like they will be closing their business for good. Yet another piece of sad news that a Great Printing Company in Singapore will be exiting the industry.
